The Truth About Sisterhood

WNBA Rookie of The Year: Protect the Dawg!

08 July 2024

For those who questioned whether Angel Reese had my support, the answer is YES! While she was playing for LSU, that’s a different story—DAWN STALEY has been my favorite player along with ironically, Teresa Wetherspoon, but let’s talk about Angel playing at the professional level and being a DAWG!

She’s growing phenomenally and being business-minded regarding her brand. Smart move. Being selected as Rookie of the Year won’t be easier for her, but I hope she is rewarded for her consistency and historical feat which as of this article, is 12 straight double-doubles. She’s focused on winning and being a leader, for a team that was garbage last year. Sure, they have T-Spoon as head coach, but what Angel does is purely from the heart. I love it!

"She has passion a swagger that continues to outweigh any negativity."

She wants to win. Can she learn a little more about sportsmanship? Sure. Sportsmanship is no guarantee. Take Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks, or Draymond Green from the Golden State Warriors for instance—they are examples of poor sportsmanship—unhinged yet glorified. They shouldn’t be. It’s disastrous for the game and business. Someone will get hurt. Seriously. The Connecticut Suns, Alyssa Thomas—disappointing how she intentionally goes after players. Candace Parker is a perfect example of what happens when unsportsmanlike conduct goes unchecked. Angel Reese has no place in this conversation. She’s not any of them.

But despite that, the WNBA should do a better job at protecting recent college graduates and provide access to support such as mental health counseling for their transitions. Not because they are women. The NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL teams need it too. They need access to sound financial planning. They can learn how to market their brands and respond to the pressures that accompany access to increased wealth such as boundaries, healthy coping skills, and avoiding addiction. Why? Because these individuals are employed by organizations/teams that pull in millions maybe even billions. It’s an investment or a win. A win for all involved.

Angel Reese’s rise to stardom should be supported. They all should be. Their low salaries and hopes of endorsements so they can live a sustainable life are a kick in the teeth.

Protect the dawg at all costs.
